Friday Random Ten

It's friday again.

  1. Cultural Genetics, Frameshift. Would you believe, progressive metal from a Dream Theater spinoff, where all of the songs are based on essays by Richard Dawkins?
  2. The New Madera Waltz, Salamander Crossing. A quiet waltz, by a bluegrass band from New England.
  3. Light Mass Prayers, Porcupine Tree. Great band, which started out as a prank.
  4. Matte Kudasai, King Crimson. King Crimson, probably the best progressive band ever.
  5. Jim Coleman's/Spellan's Fiddle, Harry Bradley. Very sparse traditional Irish music by (arguably) the finest Irish flautist in the world. If you want to hear what Irish music is supposed to sound like, Harry is pretty much the guy to listen to.
  6. Deadwing, Porcupine Tree. PT comes up again today. Gosh, what are the odds of that? Some people would say that couldn't have happened randomly, since I've got thousands of songs on my ipod. :-)
  7. Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell, the Flaming Lips. A new acquisition, which I'm not thrilled with. I'd heard great things about the Flaming Lips, but this album leaves me cold.
  8. Jeremy Reel, Psychograss. Really fantastic wacko bluegrass from a bunch o'Loonies including my old banjo teacher, the truly great Tony Trischka. (Psychograss also include Darol Anger, Todd Phillips, Mike Marshall, and David Grier.)
  9. What can you mach?, Shirim Klezmer Orchestra. Very cool klezmer album.
  10. Scents and Subtle Sounds, Phish. I really like Phish; shame I didn't discover them until after they broke up.
