Spam in the comments

Unfortunately, we're having our first outbreak of spam in the comments. For now, I'm deleting them as I find them. But I thought it would be good to make clear why you're seeing deleted posts, and what I'm deleting.

The only thing I'm deleting from comments is true spam: "make money fast" schemes, and links to commercial websites trying to boost their google pagerank. I'm not touching substantive comments of any kind.

  • Well, then, let me take this opportunity to tell you how much I am enjoying your posts so far. Can I request more probablility/statistics stuff?

  • Try turning on comment verification. It will cut down on the spam quite a bit, although it won't completely eliminate it.

  • Oops. I mean try turning on "word verification."

  • Seriously, everyone I know of on blogger.com has had to turn on the word verification to keep the spam under control.

OT, I just wanted to say that yours is rapidly becoming one of my favorite blogs.

  • Another possibility is to use an outside commenting service. Haloscan, while not perfect, is easy to use and free. And in a few months of using it I have had exactly one comment spam.
